CARICOM Ministers engage Türkiye on climate resilience and COP31 preparations

(Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat, Turkeyen, Georgetown, Guyana) – CARICOM Ministers with responsibility for the Environment and Sustainable Development held a bilateral meeting with the General Director of Environmental Impact Assessment, Permits and Supervision of Türkiye, Mr. Fatih Ekmekçi, on the margins of the 124th Special Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED-Environment and Sustainable Development), held 26-27 March 2026 in Georgetown, Guyana.

Discussions focused on advancing climate resilience among vulnerable states, strengthening international cooperation and climate finance mechanisms, and aligning priorities in preparation for the 2026 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP31), to be held at the Antalya Expo Center in Antalya, Türkiye, from 9 to 20 November 2026.

With several CARICOM Member States classified as Small Island Developing States (SIDS), the Ministers underscored the Region’s vulnerability to climate impacts and highlighted the need for equitable climate action that reflects these circumstances.

The engagement reaffirmed CARICOM’s commitment to working with international partners, including Türkiye, to achieve meaningful outcomes for the Region at COP31.
