GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – The Guyana government says it remains optimistic that the Amaila Falls Hydro-Power project will become a reality despite the decision of the US-based Sithe Global Power, LLC to withdraw from the project last year.
“We haven’t given up on Amaila. As far as I know it is back with the IDB (Inter American Development Bank) board, and hopefully they be concluding on that in the not too distant future. The US$80 million is coming from the GRIF to put as our equity into the Amaila Fall project so that’s where that money is coming from,” President Donald Ramotar said.
The Amaila Falls Hydropower Project is considered the flagship of Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy. The government says Amaila will deliver a steady source of clean, renewable energy that is affordable and reliable and is envisioned to meet approximately 90 per cent of the country’s domestic energy needs while removing dependency on fossil fuels.
