At the 20th Annual Caribbean Child Research Conference on 1 December, CARICOM Deputy Secretary-General Dr Armstrong Alexis delivered the keynote under the theme “Leaving No Child Behind: Bridging Gaps for Marginalised Children in the Caribbean.”
In his remarks, Dr Alexis commended The University of the West Indies and its partners for sustaining this vital regional platform where scholarship, advocacy, and children’s voices converge. He reflected on the resilience of Jamaica in the wake of Hurricane Melissa, underscoring the indomitable spirit of Caribbean societies. He also highlighted the urgent need to address child marginalisation through research, policy, and programmes, drawing attention to poverty, disability, migration, and violence as persistent challenges.
The Deputy Secretary-General also celebrated the legacy of Caribbean youth leadership, pointing to inspiring examples of former youth ambassadors and council leaders who now serve at the highest levels of government and regional institutions. With a call to action, he urged academics, policymakers, and advocates to place children at the centre of development, especially in the context of technological transformation, climate change, and disaster recovery.
His keynote reinforced a powerful message: the future of the Caribbean depends on ensuring that no child is left behind.
