UWI welcoming sponsorship for Nelson Mandela Freedom Park

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – The Nelson Mandela Freedom Park located at University Drive, Cave Hill, which will separate the traditional and newer parts of the Cave Hill Campus, will house a gazebo, a bar, washrooms, relaxation areas and a number of other gazebos will be spread across the landscape. Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of the UWI Cave Hill Campus Sir Hilary Beckles announced on Monday that the Freedom Park, a tribute to anti-apartheid South African leader and former president Nelson Mandela, was “long in coming”. The Park will serve to be a recreational/entertainment space for students and others with “UWI passes” who want a serene place to study or visit, Beckles said. Beckles further noted that an ecological impact study was carried out at the historical site, with the aim of protecting the natural environment. As such, all vegetation of significance identified through the study, will be persevered.
