THIRD CONFERENCE OF COMMONWEALTH CARIBBEAN COUNTRIES, 8-10 MARCH 1965, GEORGETOWN, GUYANA

The Third Conference of Commonwealth Countries began consideration of its agenda this morning under the Chairmanship of Prime Minister of British Guiana, Mr. L.F.S. Burnham.

The Acting Prime Minister of Jamaica, Mr. Donald Sangster, Deputy Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Patrick Solomon, and Prime Minister of Barbados Mr. Errol Barrow led the delegations for their respective countries. After the formal opening, the morning session of the Conference (which ended early to permit delegates to attend the civic luncheon given in their honour) discussed and settled procedural matters including the question of the priority to be given to certain items on the Agenda.

At its afternoon session the Conference reviewed progress in implementing decisions of the Second Conference and agreed on ways of pursuing action on matters which had not so far been dealt with.

Dealing with the future of the West Indies sugar industry, the Conference recorded its gratitude to the Prime Minister of Barbados for the steps he had taken to hold the recent meeting of representatives of the Governments of Barbados, British Guiana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, the British West Indies Sugar Association, the Caribbean Cane Farmers Association and the Caribbean Congress of Labour on the sale of sugar under the Commonwealth Agreement. The Conference endorsed the resolution passed by that Conference.

The Conference later considered the question of the decline in export sales of West Indian rums and decided to recommend to the Governments that a working party be established to study the matter.

The Conference resumes tomorrow at 9.30 a.m.
