SIR JAMES LEADS CARICOM LEADERS’ MISSION TO ST KITTS/NEVIS

Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines the Rt Hon Sir James Mitchell and the Prime Minister of Dominica, the Hon Edison James are in St Kitts/Nevis holding discussions with the principals involved in the secession issue.

The Prime Ministers, accompanied by Ambassador Kingsley Lane of St Vincent and the Grenadines arrived in Basseterre on Wednesday for a two day visit. The visit is on behalf of the leaders of the Caribbean Community who had agreed at the recent XIX Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government in St Lucia that a “high-powered CARICOM delegation, at the level of Heads of Government” would visit the country to assist in the resolution of the crisis.

This decision was taken prior to the announcement by Nevis Premier Mr Vance Amory of the August 10 referendum on the island which asked voters to decide on secession. The motion for secession was defeated.

Sir James, who is leading the team said that his mission will listen to all parties concerned both in St Kitts and Nevis and also hear their views on constitutional proposals put forward by the Constitutional Commission headed by Sir Fred Phillips which handed in its report last August.
