Letter from Mr. Edwin Carrington, Secretary-General, Caribbean Community (CARICOM), to Mr. Brian Lara, Captain of the West Indies Cricket Team

Dear Mr. Lara

The outstanding victory today so magnificently won against the Australians in the final Test Match of the current Test Series took us really beyond the boundary, and represents an historic day in the annals of cricket in the Caribbean Community and indeed the cricketing world.

A remarkable test match with a remarkable result achieved by the West Indies in the true spirit of the game was, as we like to see cricket. The sensational record achievement for having chased the most runs ever 418, and to win with time and wickets in hand against what is obviously the best team in the world at this time, is certainly cause for celebration. This victory and the manner in which it was achieved is undoubtedly a great source of inspiration for the team, particularly to the younger players, and to all the peoples of the Caribbean Community. It points to the potential to regain our position as true world champions of international cricket. We are indeed proud and you have all made us proud. Here, in true display of sportsmanship, everyone has been a winner.

As Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community, I extend to you, the Manager, the Coach and the members of your victorious team our heartfelt congratulations.

For now, we celebrate, and may the West Indies Team not look back as we move to the upcoming one-day internationals and beyond.
Yours sincerely,

EDWIN W. CARRINGTON
SECRETARY-GENERAL

Mr. Brian Lara
