GUYANA-POLITICS-President reiterates need for opposition to ensure passage of anti-money laundering bill

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – President Donald Ramotar has reiterated the need for the opposition parties to support the anti-money laundering legislation which he said is part of the international initiative to deal with terrorism and money laundering.
The opposition parties – A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance for Change (AFC) – control 33 of the 65-seats in the National Assembly and  have voted against the Anti Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AMLCFT) Amendment Bill.
They said they would only support the legislation once their concerns are met.
But Ramotar told reporters that the bill was not as a result of Guyana politics, but an international process and hence the reason why the country faces further blacklisting.
