Dominican Republic: President to Find ‘Solution’ for Haitian Migrants

President of the Dominican Republic Danilo Medina met yesterday with activist groups fighting against a court ruling, that strips citizenship from thousands of people born to undocumented migrant workers since 1929.
The ruling from the Dominican Constitutional Court could lead to mass deportations of Haitians living in the Dominician Republic and has been criticised by the United Nations as it may leave people stateless and without access to identity documents.
Speaking after a 45-minute meeting with the President, Ana Maria Belique, a spokesperson for Reconocido movement and also a Dominican-born woman from Haitian parents- said they were well received by the president who was sympathetic to their cause.
