DECLARATION OF PARAMARIBO ISSUED AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE TRAINING/STRATEGIC PLANNING WORKSHOP OF THE CARICOM REGIONAL YOUTH AMBASSADORS, 19-27 AUGUST 2002, PARAMARIBO, SURINAME

We, the CARICOM Youth Ambassadors meeting in Paramaribo, Suriname between 19-27 August 2002;

Recognising the high expectations of our performance as representatives of the National Youth Organisations and our obligations to the youth of this Region,

Considering the priorities of the Community established by the Conference of CARICOM Heads of Government and the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD) for intersectoral approaches to youth development.

Pledge our fullest possible involvement in promoting the Community and its major programmes, including the establishment of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy.

Agree to place emphasis during the period 2002-2003 on assisting the Community in furthering its programmes in the fight against HIV/AIDS, the reduction of demand for licit and illicit drugs and the advancement of sustainable development, paying particular attention to the environment.

Endorse our support for the regional fight against HIV/AIDS by signing the Pan Caribbean Partnership Commitment as advocates for behavioural change among young people, to improve the mechanisms for care and treatment and the reduction of stigma for People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWA).

Also Endorse a series of other initiatives, such as increasing awareness of young people in schools and communities about critical issues pertaining to Caribbean unity and integration.

Agree to strengthen management capacity of the CARICOM Youth Ambassador Corps through the establishment of an Executive Bureau comprising the Dean, Vice Dean and outgoing Dean of the CARICOM Youth Ambassadors Bureau and by making provision for an effective communications system.

Also Agree that the CYA Programme is to seek representation on the appropriate Organs of the Community, such as the COHSOD, the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) and the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR).

Request that CARICOM makes provision for broader participation of youth in an annual Regional Youth Forum coordinated by the CARICOM Youth Ambassador Corps
