(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) – Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Dr. Carla Barnett, on Tuesday, 21 April, welcomed the State Secretary of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. Géza Andreas von Geyr, for a courtesy exchange during his visit to Guyana.
During the engagement, the parties noted the longstanding and positive cooperation between CARICOM and Germany, as well as between the Community and the European Union. They also discussed the situation in Haiti, with both noting the need for sustained focus on the multidimensional crisis in the CARICOM Member State.
Climate change and climate action were also key elements of the discussion. Secretary-General Barnett highlighted the Community’s strong record on climate action, despite contributing less than one percent of global emissions. In this regard, Germany reaffirmed its commitment to climate action, environmental protection, and advocacy through the United Nations system if elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
