CARICOM CHAIRMAN TO PUSH PROGRESS ON FUNCTIONAL COOPERATION

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Dr. The Honourable Ralph Gonsalves, Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, hopes during his tenure as Chair of the 15-member grouping, to engender more progress in the area of functional cooperation within the Community.

At a press conference yesterday at the CARICOM Secretariat headquarters, Prime Minister Gonsalves said he also wanted to see a more coordinated approach to relations between CARICOM and other regions such as South East Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe.

During his six months, (January-June 2007) in the rotating Chairmanship of the Community, Prime Minister Gonsalves said his quest would also be to continue to “push more and more” for the ennoblement of the Caribbean civilization.

The press conference capped a day of activities at the Secretariat during which he held talks with CARICOM Secretary-General, H.E. Edwin Carrington, members of the Executive Management Committee, and met staff of the Secretariat’

The CARICOM Chairman also declared open an exhibition coordinated by the Secretariat’s Documentation Centre under the theme `Celebrating West Indies Cricket’. The exhibition, in the lower corridor of the Secretariat, runs until April 27 and highlights the Region’s cricketing history, heroes and symbols.

Dr. Gonsalves is accompanied by Deputy, Integration Unit, Office of the Prime Minister, Ms Nerissa Gittens, Press Secretary, Office of the Prime Minister, Mr. Hans King and Private Secretary, Office of the Prime Minister, Ms Angie Williams.
