PM hints that Warner may not be UNC candidate for by-election

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar has indicated that her former national security minister Austin “Jack” Warner is not an automatic choice of the ruling United National Congress (UNC) to contest the parliamentary seat he vacated in the wake of a damning report of his activities as an international football executive.
Warner, who launched his campaign to regain the Chaguanas West constituency over the weekend, has also hinted at the possibility of contesting the seat as an independent if he does not get the nod of the UNC, the major partner in the four-party coalition People’s Partnership government.
But as she addressed supporters of the UNC on Monday night, Persad Bissessar, who is also political leader of the party, said that “every member of our party has a right to seek the nomination for the by-election in the constituency.
