Smart Meters to be installed in St. Kitts homes by 2017

Residences in St. Kitts would soon be fitted with Smart Meters.

The St. Kitts Electrical Company (SKELEC) said the new metering project begins next month and all residential meters should be replaced in 2017.

Implement of the new metering project is designed to help consumers to better manage their electrical consumption. Prior to implementation, the utility will pilot the on-stream smart meters on several affordable homes now being constructed in several areas on the island.

Smart Meters.com quotes SKELEC’s communications official Gawain Fraites as saying: “Going forward, we would be implementing smart meters. Now, these smart meters do two things; they read themselves, but not only read themselves, but update themselves. They would update us regularly but they would also update the users as well. So at any given point of the day, the user can log into the website and see how much they burn at any given time of the day.

For example, between 10 and 12 I burn 10 kilowatts. Actually, we have a home calculator whereby you can plug in your appliances, how long they run and you would get an approximate figure of how many units, how many consumption hours that these equipment work.”

He also told SKNVibes Business that the new meters will help prevent energy losses thereby shaving “off the cost of producing energy.”

“But that’s where we are heading and that will help a lot in the consumption of energy, not just for the consumers but for SKELEC as well,” said SKELEC’s Gavin Fraites.
