Details of the Post

Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the post of Advanced Skills Teacher Mentor – Literacy, Primary Sector in the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports in Montserrat. The successful applicant will be appointed before the commencement of the fiscal year in 2021/2022, that is, prior to April 2021.

Job Purpose 

To provide specialist training and development for the implementation of literacy curriculum within the Primary School System. This includes teacher training/development, guest teaching, and support for students with challenges and implementation of student intervention program. This professional will also contribute to the National Curriculum Reform and Education Review process in 2021.

Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with Ministry of Education staff to plan and deliver in-service seasonal professional development for new and returning staff members aligned to high priority initiatives and outcomes in the area of literacy.
  • Support the development of high-quality/effective literacy instruction in Primary Schools through developing supplemental materials, unique lesson plans, teacher observation and coaching teachers to improve instructional planning, teaching practice, and the use of data, assessment, and instructional technology.
  • Collaborate with Student Support Unit, SEN teachers and Educational Psychologist to develop learning plans for students in need. 
  • Work with various teams (administrators, teachers, cadre leaders) to facilitate analysis of data provided by diagnostics, common assessments, and formative assessments.
  • Support National Curriculum Development by intertwining literacy education into through all levels.
  • Develop Literacy Intervention Program to support students in need with measurable tools for competence development
  • Collaborate with Ministry of Education staff and school administrators to develop policies and school structures that incorporate Common Core teaching strategies.
  • Continuously monitor, track and analyze student achievement data in order to identify needed supports and strategies for all student

Reporting

The successful applicant will report to the Director of Education.

PERSONAL SPECIFICATION

The successful applicant should possess;

  • Education
    • Graduate Trained Teacher Qualification (Bachelor’s Degree and Teacher Training)
    • Master’s Degree in Literacy Instruction or related field
  • Reading Specialist Credential or Reading Certificate required
  • Fifteen (15) years teaching experience.
  • Prior experience developing and implementing literacy intervention programme with recorded success.
  • Excellence in time management, taking initiative, and follow-through
  • Experience providing intervention programs for literacy with varying student population

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The successful applicant should possess;

  • Experience in policy and programme development
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time-management skills
  • Experience in education reform within the OECS or CARICOM States

Terms of Appointment

Appointment will be made on a three-year fixed term contract.

Remuneration

The total remuneration package for this position is EC$210,000.00 which includes basic salary and allowances.
