MESSAGE FROM H.E. EDWIN CARRINGTON, SECRETARY-GENERAL, CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY (CARICOM), TO THE TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO FOOTBALL TEAM, THE SOCA WARRIORS

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The following is a message from His Excellency Edwin Carrington, Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), to the Trinidad and Tobago Football Team, the Soca Warriors.

As the 2006 FIFA World Cup opens today in Munich, it is with a sense of pride and anticipation that I take this opportunity to wish the members of the Trinidad and Tobago football team, the Soca Warriors, every success as they take on their opponents in the quest for the much coveted World Cup. This feat, by the smallest nation to qualify this year, represents one of the greatest sources of collective pride for the Caribbean and its Diaspora.

This is the second time in five years that the Caribbean region is being represented at a FIFA World Cup competition. In 2002, we were represented by the black, green and gold of the Jamaican Reggae Boyz. This time around, those colours have been changed to red, white and black. However, they not only represent Trinidad and Tobago but have assumed the responsibility of being new Regional Ambassadors who have once again put us on the world map in a positive way.

On behalf of the entire Caribbean Community and the members of staff of the CARICOM Secretariat, I would like to convey the best of wishes to Dwight Yorke and his team. Remember that the entire Region is rooting for you!

Edwin W. Carrington
Secretary-General
Caribbean Community
