CARICOM DSG highlights importance of new statistical framework

Regional statisticians on Monday began a week-long training programme in Barbados that is aimed at building capacity in Population Modelling, Small Area Population Estimates, and the Application of the Degree of Urbanisation (DEGURBA).

Dr. Armstrong Alexis, CARICOM Deputy Secretary-General, addressed the opening of the training in the important statistical framework.

In his remarks, the Deputy Secretary-General said the DEGURBA provides a scientifically sound, comparable statistical framework for classifying cities, towns, semi-dense areas, and rural areas, strengthening geospatial data analysis and supporting national and regional planning, particularly in CARICOM’s ongoing quest for climate justice and its efforts to build resilience against climate events.

“This workshop therefore sits at the very heart of our Regional Strategy for the Development of Statistics (RSDS), our regional master plan for statistical transformation and modernisation, which we continue to implement under the theme ‘Building Resilience in the Caribbean Community.’ The CARICOM RSDS strategically prioritises standards and harmonisation, innovation and modernisation of statistical processes, and the development of integrated statistical systems, three areas that closely align with the intended outcomes of the DEGURBA methodology,” Dr. Armstrong said.
