Details of the Post
The Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCIG), through the Ministry of Tourism, Agriculture, Fisheries, Heritage and the Environment and the Department of Fisheries and Marine Resource Management (DFMRM), is implementing a comprehensive TCI Fisheries Sustainable Livelihood Strategy. This strategic program is designed to modernize and diversify the fisheries sector by supporting sustainable practices, enhancing value chains, improving research and data systems, opening new markets, and integrating local fishers into the broader tourism economy.
To support the successful rollout of this national strategy, DFMRM seeks a dedicated Fisheries Extension Officer to coordinate and implement extension activities at the community level. The incumbent will play a critical role in ensuring that national policies, plans, and programs—particularly those related to aquaculture development, sustainable fisheries, and alternative livelihoods—are effectively communicated and executed across local communities.
The Fisheries Extension Officer will be responsible for facilitating technology transfer, training, and capacity-building programs, as well as implementing and monitoring projects that support socio-economic advancement among fishers. The role involves conducting feasibility studies to assess the viability of alternative or enhanced livelihood strategies, coordinating outreach activities such as field days and workshops, and building partnerships among key stakeholders. The officer will also monitor the community-level impact of extension policies and provide feedback to inform research and guide strategic interventions—creating strong linkages between the sector’s evolving needs and scientific support services.
In support of the fisheries sector, funding has been allocated through Invest TCI to advance fisheries-related initiatives and promote sustainable economic development. The Fisheries Extension Officer will play a vital role in collaborating with Invest TCI to ensure the effective implementation, monitoring, and follow-through of funded projects. Additionally, the officer will assist fisherfolk in accessing available financial support and in maximizing the impact of these resources through sound project planning and execution.
