PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – In their concession speeches on Monday night, both the defeated United National Congress candidate Khadijah Ameen and her leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar promised to continue the “work” in Chaguanas West.
This being politics, however, the services provided by the Government to that rebel constituency will most likely be determined by whichever strategy the ruling UNC decides best serves its electoral prospects.
These options are clear-cut. On the one hand, the UNC administration could fulfill its promises made on the campaign trail, hoping that such goodies would unseat Jack Warner in the next general election. The promises made by the Prime Minister a mere 24 hours before election day included $50 million for former sugar workers of Caroni (1975) Ltd, $48 million to develop a Felicity residential site with over 700 lots to be distributed later this year, and a new health centre in that voter-heavy area.
