(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Saint Lucia and St Kitts and Nevis will face off in the Finals of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Regional Quiz competition on Tuesday, 1 July, 2008, following their resounding victories against their opponents on Monday, 30 June in the Semi-Finals of the competition which took place at the Antigua and Barbuda Exhibition and Cultural Centre in Berry Bay.
In the first match, Saint Lucia took on Antigua and Barbuda and trounced them 64-10 points, re-asserting their dominance in the competition. In the second match, St Kitts and Nevis beat Trinidad and Tobago 45-27 points to secure the final spot.
The Finals will commence at 10:00a.m. with a brief opening ceremony which will be addressed by the CARICOM Secretary-General, H.E Edwin W. Carrington and Antigua and Barbuda’s Minister of Education, the Hon. Bertrand Joseph.
Sponsored in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the CARICOM Regional Quiz Competition is one of the activities organised by the CARICOM Secretariat to mark the Thirty-fifth Anniversary of the Signing of the Treaty of Chaguaramas.
The competition is aimed at increasing the knowledge of students about the Caribbean Community and the integration movement.
Eleven Member States – Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Guyana, Jamaica, Montserrat, St Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago – are participating in this year’s Competition which is designed for middle grade students of secondary schools.
The four-round competition is being conducted by Quizmaster and Communications Consultant Dr. Rovin Deodat.
In addition to the CARICOM Trophy, the winner and runner-up in this year’s Quiz will receive prizes and trophies donated by a number of organizations including: Ansa Mcal, Caribbean Airlines, Citizen’s Bank Guyana Inc, Hand-in Hand Mutual Fire and Life Insurance Company, Frandec Travel Service, Giftland Office Max, Guyana and Trinidad Mutual Fire and Life Insurance company, Laparkan Holdings Limited, Medi-care Pharmacy, Le Meridien Pegasus, Neal and Massy Holdings Limited, Sagicor Group Limited, Scotia Bank, Guyana and Topaz Jewellers, Guyana.
