(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Saint Lucia has secured its place in the Semi-Finals of the first Zonal Round of the CARICOM Regional Quiz Competition held;12 June 2008 at the Anglican Pastoral Centre in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
The Team, comprising Jasia King, Lena Taupier, JnClaude Gustave and Denise Fedee (Reserve) beat both Barbados and St Vincent and the Grenadines to claim the first spot in the Semi-finals slated for 30 June in Antigua and Barbuda.
In their first match against Barbados, Team Saint Lucia scored 44 points to Barbados’ 28 and in their second match they defeated St Vincent and the Grenadines, 51 to 33 points.
Saint Lucia’s Jasia King emerging as the most outstanding player in the first leg of the Zonal competition, amassing a score of 36 in both matches in which she played.
“It takes some time for me to absorb it but I am very happy that my team has won and that I was able to contribute a significant number of points to the victory the fifteen year-old said.Coach Allison Lawrence said “We have a good chance of winning this competition; I have a good team of willing young people who are determined and motivated …”.“In 2004 Saint Lucia did not qualify for the Semi –Finals, but this year I believe they are going all the way,” a jubilant coach Lawrence said.
Zonal Round Two of the CARICOM regional Quiz will be held in Trinidad and Tobago on 17 -18 June after which four teams will advance to the Semi –Finals in Antigua and Barbuda on 30 June. The winning team will be presented to the Conference of Heads of Government on July 1 at the Opening Ceremony.
The CARICOM Regional Quiz Competition 2008 was organized for students of middle grades in secondary schools and is aimed at further increasing their knowledge about the Caribbean Community and the Integration movement.
Twelve Member States – Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Montserrat, St Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago – are participating in this year’s competition.
In 2004, Guyana won the competition, beating St Kitts and Nevis into second position.
