Statisticians from across the Region are in Curacao for a series of activities including the 50th Meeting of the Standing Committee of Caribbean Statisticians (SCCS) and related annual engagements. The events this year which, will be held from 27 – 31 October, are jointly organised by the CARICOM Secretariat’s Regional Statistics Programme (RSP) and the Central Bureau of Statistics Curacao, with support from the European Union under the 11th EDF.

Ahead of the week-long event, the CARICOM Advisory Group on Statistics, and the Regional Network of Planning Officers (RNPO) for Education have convened a Technical Dialogue to advance on 24 October to advance strategies to strengthen education data systems in the Region. The 34th Meeting of CARICOM Advisory Group on Statistics takes place from 23 to 25 October in preparation for the 50th Meeting. This first Technical Dialogue between Chief Statisticians and technical officers responsible for education statistics in the Ministries of Education throughout CARICOM is jointly facilitated by the Regional Statistics Programme, in collaboration with the Human Resource Development (HRD) programme of the Directorate of Human and Social Development.

The upcoming milestone meeting of the SCCS, under the theme ‘Improving Lives through Statistics: Strengthening and Innovating Together’ – also the theme of the Year of Statistics – formally opens on October 27. It precedes the Thirty-Seventh Meeting of the Regional Census Coordinating Committee (RCCC) a Caribbean Data Day, and the Fifteenth Regional Statistical Research Seminar. The annual Research Seminar, in particular, serves as a regional platform for sharing knowledge, strengthening partnerships, and promoting innovation in official statistics throughout the Caribbean.

This series of statistical meetings marks the culmination of activities of CARICOM’s Year of Statistics. The 2024-2025 Year of Statistics was declared in CARICOM in November 2024, during the Fourth High-level Advocacy Forum for Statistics, held in Belize. These statistical meetings bring together Chief Statisticians, other senior staff of National Statistical Offices, researchers, as well as senior representatives from international organisations.

The programme for the events will focus on modernising statistical systems, enhancing data quality, and promoting regional integration in statistical development.

These regional meetings bring together directors and senior statisticians from national statistical offices across the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), as well as representatives from international and regional organisations. The annual Research Seminar serves as a platform for sharing knowledge, strengthening partnerships, and promoting innovation in official statistics throughout the Caribbean.

Hosting this year’s CARICOM Seminar represents an important milestone for Curaçao – the newest Associate Member – reaffirming the island’s commitment to regional cooperation and the advancement of reliable, high-quality statistics as tools for sustainable development.
