Montserrat sends Defence Force contingent to Dominica

With the passage of Tropical Storm Erika and coming right after the conclusion of the Royal Montserrat Defence Force annual camp the Government of Montserrat with the UK Department for International Development support has decided to deploy a contingent from the Force to Dominica. The contingent will carry out disaster relief work and support CDEMA in their work on that island.

Second Lieutenant Glenroy Foster of the RMDF his self and Civil Engineer is leading the RMDF contingent of thirteen persons. The contingent is comprised of both male and female and members who are skilled in various trades and in search and rescue having being refreshed in this area at the annual camp which concluded two days ago. The Montserrat troops will be accommodated by the Dominica Police Force while on duty there.

The assignment is expected to last for one week in the first instance. The Honourable Premier and the Acting Commanding Officer Peter W A White were on hand this morning to see the RMDF contingent off. Also on the trip are a number of police officers who are on compassionate leave and the Honourable David Osborne who would be representing the Government of Montserrat.

When contacted Captain White said “well its being a busy four months so far for the Royal Montserrat Defence Force, for May and June we were in full on preparation for the Queen’s Birthday Parade. Then we had the special parade for the departure of Governor Davis, then a special parade making the 20th anniversary of the start of the volcanic crisis, then we had the special parade of the arrival of the new governor, then we were very much involved the disaster exercise with the vising UK ship RFA LYM Bay, then we had our 10 day camp from the 21st to the 30th August and now on the 1st September on active deployment on behalf of our Montserrat to assist the government and people of Dominica.

The last time we had similar deployment overseas was in 2004 when we were deployed to assist the government and people of Grenada after the passing of Hurricane Ivan.”

On behalf of the Commanding Officer of the RMDF, Captain Alvin E Ryan I wish to assure the people of Montserrat that we will do our country proud and a big thank you to those employers who again at very short notice releases their employees who are members of the force to go on deployment on behalf of the Government and people of Montserrat.Second Lieutenant Glenroy Foster of the RMDF his self and Civil Engineer is leading the RMDF contingent of thirteen persons.
