Message by Dean of the CARICOM Youth Ambassador Corps, Vanessa Burke, to mark International Youth Day 2024

Today, as we come together to observe International Youth Day under the theme “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development,” we highlight the incredible power of digital technology in shaping our world. In this digital age, we, the youth, are leading the charge—not just staying connected with each other, but actively using technology to address some of the most pressing global challenges. Whether through social media, innovative apps, or digital platforms, we are not only sharing our stories but also driving awareness and solutions for the critical issues of our time.

Here in the Caribbean, our digital landscape is rapidly evolving, with over 70% of our population now having access to social media (Statista,2024). This widespread connectivity has given us new ways to engage in global conversations and ensure that our unique voices and challenges are heard. However, we cannot overlook the digital divide that still exists. It’s essential that we work together to ensure that every young person, regardless of their background, has equal access to these digital tools.

The opportunities that arise from digital progression are immense. In the Caribbean, young innovators are not only creating tech solutions tailored to our unique needs but also harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to tackle issues like disaster response, healthcare, and environmental conservation. AI-powered tools can analyze vast amounts of data, helping us make informed decisions and offering new ways to address our region’s challenges. These digital pathways, including the integration of AI, represent our commitment to solving real-world problems, creating jobs, and building a resilient future for our communities.

As we move forward, I want to encourage each and every one of you across the Caribbean and around the world to continue embracing digital tools to tackle the challenges we face. Whether it’s advocating for climate action, preserving our rich cultural heritage, or addressing social security concerns, technology gives us a powerful way to amplify our voices and drive meaningful change. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are within reach, and more so if we leverage the digital tools at our disposal to accelerate our progress.

Let us remember that the journey from clicks to progress requires us to work together, innovate, and stay committed to including youth in the decision-making process. By supporting each other, sharing our knowledge, and working as a community, we can turn digital potential into real progress for our region and the world.

On this International Youth Day, we celebrate the achievements of our youth in the digital space and reaffirm our commitment to empowering all of us as the drivers of sustainable development. The future is digital, and with our determination and creativity, I believe that future is bright.
