LIVE BROADCAST OF CARICOM HEADS SUMMIT

Millions of people across the Caribbean and in the diaspora will enjoy a live broadcast of the opening ceremony for the 23rd Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community on 3 July 2002. The live broadcast is being sponsored by the Caribbean Community Secretariat using the services of the Caribbean Media Corporation and it will run from 5:00-7:30 PM.

The leaders of CARICOM and Associate Member States and their delegations will be in Guyana for the Meeting which will take place 3rd -5th July 2002.

The opening ceremony will be a mixture of speeches and presentations including a colourful presentation depicting Guyana's rich blend of culture. At the ceremony, Trinidadian Professor Rhoda Reddock of the University of the West Indies will be conferred with the Triennial Award for Women. This is CARICOM's highest award for women.

To produce and deliver the live broadcast the CMC will be bringing into Guyana several pieces of equipment including a mobile satellite unit, popularly known as a flyaway kit. In providing the live broadcast, the CARICOM Secretariat is implementing a decision to utilise the electronic media more effectively to directly reach the people of The Community. This will keep them apace with developments and encourage greater participation, increase knowledge, make information easily available thus accelerating the move towards the development of a knowledge based society in the Region.
