Jamaica to host Youth Development Conference in September

The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) of the University of the West Indies, is partnering with the Caribbean Regional Youth Council (CRYC) to convene the first SALISES Caribbean Youth Development Conference from September 30–October 2, 2015. The theme of the conference is ‘Youth Post 2015: Directions for Sustainable Development in the Caribbean’.

The conference, which will be held at the UWI Regional Headquarters in Kingston, Jamaica, will provide a unique opportunity for young people, youth development practitioners, academics and policy-makers to meet together to discuss and agree on priority actions for research, policy and programming for youth in the Post 2015 Agenda. It will feature round-table discussions, research presentations, films, workshops and networking opportunities over the three days. The key questions to be answered include:

  • What do young people envision for sustainable development in the Caribbean?
  • What are the main vulnerabilities youth face?
  • What are the contributions they make?
  • What youth-specific Post-2015 goals and targets are priorities for the Caribbean? How will these be implemented and monitored?
  • What evidence is there of successful programmes/good practice which will support youth empowerment in sustainable development?
  • What are the priorities for youth development research and programming to support achievement of the Post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals?

With approximately 20% of the world’s population being between the ages of 15 and 24 years, there is an increased interest in discussing youth inclusion in the new international Sustainable Development Goals which will be decided by the United Nations next month. The Caribbean region will also celebrate Caribbean Youth Day on September 30.
