ITALIANS SEEK CARICOM SUPPORT FOR 2015 EXHIBITION BID

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)  An eight-member delegation from Italy yesterday visited the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat to seek the Region’s support for that country’s bid to host the 2015 Universal Registered Exhibition in Milan under the theme `Feeding the Planet: Energy for Life’.

The delegation, led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honourable Vittorio Craxi presented, for the first time in South America, the bid in the form of a short documentary.

The Universal Registered Exhibition, held every five years, is a display of the world’s most innovative projects. Agriculture is the second largest industry in Italy and Milan, promoted as the city in constant evolution, is the second largest agricultural district in Italy.

Special Governmental Envoy for Milan’s 2015 bid, Ambassador Claudio Moreno urged the Community to take the lead in assembling ideas to make the exhibition “a moment of rethinking and re-launching” of the Millennium Development engagement.

Minister Craxi proposed that CARICOM and Italy work together for the best utilization of resources particularly in agriculture and in the fight against diseases afflicting developing countries.

Guyana, the Secretary General said, was the most appropriate place to present the bid since it holds responsibility for agriculture in the Community. Acknowledging the importance of food quality, the Secretary General said that of pressing concern to the Region was the frequency with which people were being infected with diseases for which they blamed the food they ate.

Among those at the simple function were staff members of the CARICOM Secretariat and a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
