Dr. Brathwaite: Country has no control

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – Barbados should be conscious of its food supply, as the ability to withstand external shocks such as a nuclear accident, major terrorist attack, natural disaster or any international event that disrupts the movement of food to Barbados or leads to international food price increases, could leave us very vulnerable indeed. According to Dr. Chelston Brathwaite, an agriculture consultant, we would have to ask ourselves, “Who will feed us?” Emphasising that food is a prerequisite for social stability and economic development and as such should be provided through more local means, Brathwaite pointed to a time in our history during the Second World War, where sugar cane land was diverted to food crop production. “We can do it again,” he declared.
