DOMINICA’S CARIBS CELEBRATE

The original inhabitants of Dominica celebrate Carib Week from September 14 through 21 under the theme “Striving Together for Progress and Unity”.

Historically regarded as the first inhabitants of the Caribbean territory, they now number 3 400 persons living on approximately three and a half acres of fertile land in the north-east side of the island.

The week long programme includes a visit of the elderly to local schools, a video show entitled “The Last of the Jagua and the Indigenous People of the World” and the presentation of certificates and awards to derserving persons .

Caribs are mainly farmers but are turning to tourism showcasing their craft made of laurouma reed, wood, beads and bracelettes.

One of the main attractions to tourists during the week are the Karbet, an ancient design of wood with shingles on three sides.

Another is the Escalier-tete chien, a snake staircase located at Sinecou in the Carib territory.
