The Secretariat of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) wishes to inform that, in accordance with the decision taken by CARICOM heads of Government at their recent conference in Grenada “to create a channel of engagement with the interim administration of Haiti”, a delegation of CARICOM foreign ministers will be visiting Haiti 13-14 July 2004.
Composed of Foreign Ministers of Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago, the CARICOM Ministerial Team to Haiti will discuss recent developments with the Haitian officials. The Team will report to the Bureau of Conference on its return.
The CARICOM Secretariat wishes to take advantage of the opportunity to dispel misleading information in some sections of the regional media to the effect that CARICOM has called for the release from detention of former Prime Minister Yvon Neptune as one of the conditions for recognition of the Interim Administration as well as for a date certain for elections. CARICOM is fully aware of Haiti's internal workings with regard to due process and to the setting of dates for elections. However, CARICOM does continue to share concerns with other members of the international community with regard to the political, economic, and security situation in Haiti.
