CHILEAN AND CARICOM OFFICIALS COLLABORATE ON SPS SYSTEM

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Recognising the need to have a solid Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) regime in place in order to effectively become a viable trading partner Member States of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) are collaborating with the Organisation of American States (OAS) and the Government of Chile for a two day work shop on SPS measures.

Geared specifically towards countries in the OECS the two day workshop, which concludes on Tuesday 29 October, will afford participating countries the avenue to address their main interests and concerns regarding their SPS regimes.

Titled “Managing a Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) System: The Chilean Experience” the workshop will have experts from the Chilean Agricultural and Livestock Service who will share their experience with their colleagues from CARICOM Member States and in this first instance from the OECS countries on the management of their SPS system.

Private sector representatives will have the opportunity of discussing concrete cases where they have encountered difficulties in export markets related to SPS issues. Moreover, both CARICOM and the Chilean experts will share their experiences in helping their exporters overcome similar obstacles.

The workshop is expected to conclude with an identification of the priority needs of the countries in the SPS area and with a basic follow-up plan including training activities to address those needs such as internships in Chile or visits to countries by Chilean experts in very specific and technical matters.

The workshop is among the key activities being undertaken under the project “Strengthening the Official Sanitary System of Agricultural Goods for Export markets in CARICOM Member States,”
