CARICOM SECRETARY-GENERAL RECEIVES NATIONAL HONOUR OF GUYANA

The Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), His Excellency Edwin W. Carrington has been awarded the third highest National Honour of Guyana – the Cacique Crown of Honour (CCH). The Honour was bestowed on Mr. Carrington on Friday (July 23) by the President of Guyana, His Excellency Bharrat Jagdeo during an investiture ceremony at the Office of the President attended by representatives of the Judiciary, Members of the Cabinet of Guyana and staff of the CARICOM Secretariat.

The Office of the President said the Insignia of the Cacique Crown of Honour under the Order of Service to Guyana was presented to Mr. Carrington in recognition of his “indefatigable service to the Region with distinction and commitment as Secretary-General of the Community”. The award to the CARICOM Secretary-General was announced in July 2003 during celebrations to mark the 30th anniversary of CARICOM and comes as the Community celebrates its 31st anniversary during July this year.

And speaking with journalists following the investiture, the Secretary-General dedicated the award to the members of staff of the Caribbean Community Secretariat. “I thank the Government of Guyana for the award, which is a recognition of not just my contribution but the contribution of the staff of the CARICOM Secretariat, on whose behalf I accept this Honour,” Mr. Carrington noted.
