(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is mourning the death of Ambassador Henry Gill, former Director General of the Caribbean Regional Negotiating Machinery (CRNM).
In a message of condolence, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, Secretary-General of CARICOM, recalled Ambassador Gill’s astuteness, tenacity and diplomacy in leading the Regional team in trade negotiations, as well as his nurturing and friendly disposition that endeared him to staff and colleagues alike.
The full text of the message reads:
“It is with deep regret that the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat learned of the passing of Ambassador Henry Gill, former Director-General of the Caribbean Regional Negotiating Machinery (CRNM).
As we mourn the death of this outstanding Caribbean son, we recall his astuteness, tenacity and diplomacy in leading the regional team in trade negotiations and particularly, during the negotiations with the European Union (EU) for the CARIFORUM-EU Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA).
Ambassador Gill has also left a towering legacy in academia and in the realm of international relations, having attended, and served, with distinction at the Institute of International Relations of the University of the West Indies (UWI), and at the Latin American Economic System (SELA) where he was the Deputy Permanent Secretary.
Henry was well respected for his intellect and formidable technical expertise as well as for his nurturing and friendly disposition which endeared him to the staff of the CRNM, colleagues in the CARICOM Secretariat and the young trade specialists whom he mentored, many of whom continue to serve at national and regional levels and beyond.
On behalf of the Caribbean Community and its Secretariat, we extend our deepest condolences to his family and his many friends across the Caribbean and elsewhere.”
