PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Trinidad and Tobago Labour Minister, Errol McLeod, is not giving the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) free movement provisions of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) much of a chance if labour standards are not harmonised in the region. Addressing the opening session of the 8thInternational Labour Organisation (ILO) meeting of Caribbean labour ministers here, McLeod, a former trade unionist, said “there can be little hope for the success of the single market and economy and the free movement of labour if standards are not harmonized and a common labour platform is not established. “It is my hope that as we revisit the signing of the Treaty of Chaguaramas in 1973, issues related to labour will feature prominently on the way forward,” McLeod said.
