The Thirty-Sixth Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the CARICOM, held in Bridgetown, Barbados, 2 to 4 July 2015, endorsed the establishment of the CCREEE as the implementation hub for sustainable energy activities and projects within the region.
The legal agreement establishing the CCREEE went into force on 19 May 2018, and on 22 May 2018, the CCREEE Headquarters Agreement was signed between the Government of Barbados and the CCREEE. With the effectiveness of both agreements the Center received full legal personality in line with CARICOM laws and regulations.
CCREEE aims at improving access to modern, affordable and reliable energy services, energy security and mitigation of negative externalities of the energy system (e.g. local pollution and greenhouse gas emissions) by promoting renewable energy and energy efficiency.
Its members are: Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.
From its inception, CCREEE has been steadfast in its commitment to foster a transition to cleaner, more resilient and inclusive energy systems. Through collaboration with governments, international partners, and local stakeholders, CCREEE has spearheaded numerous pioneering projects, policy reforms, and capacity-building initiatives that have contributed to the region’s sustainable development goals.
From supporting the deployment of solar energy systems and wind farms to promoting the adoption of energy-efficient technologies in buildings, CCREEE has been at the forefront of driving innovation and knowledge exchange in the Caribbean energy sector. Through strategic partnerships, training programmes, and awareness campaigns, CCREEE has empowered local communities, businesses, and policymakers with the tools and knowledge necessary to embrace sustainable energy practices.
CCREEE acts as a catalyst for sustainable energy education in the Caribbean region, facilitating knowledge transfer, capacity development, and collaboration among various stakeholders. By strengthening the knowledge base and skills of individuals, CCREEE contributes to building a workforce that can support the sustainable energy transition and drive the region towards a more sustainable and resilient future.
The ERC Internship sub-programme provided young professionals with the opportunity to engage in data collection and analysis of energy sector data and information across the fifteen (15) CARICOM Member States. Participants undertook surveying and data collection tasks related to electricity sector data, policies, measures for a reduction in fossil fuel dependence using RE/EE, and energy resilience. Data collected and analysed were used in the development of the CARICOM Energy Report Cards.
CCREEE x CXC Regional Top Awards
The CCREEE, in its vision to remain committed to increasing the use of sustainable energy in the region partnered with Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) to incorporate energy-related topics into the syllabus of several subject areas. Development of local expertise is crucial to realise the vision of a sustainable energy CARICOM. One of the key ways to establish this is through the education of brilliants minds who will one day go on to invest in the Caribbean. Further to this, The CCREEE, in collaboration with CXC, sponsored and presented several awards to the regional top performers in these subject areas on 9 February 2023, for the 2022 CSEC and CAPE Examinations.
SCHOOL VISITS
The CCREEE team visited the all-girls school Springer Memorial School on 24 Marth 2023. Members of the CCREEE shared their career journey and answered questions about careers in the energy sector and getting prepared for university.
