UNITED NATIONS, CMC – Belize Monday appealed to the international community to help Small Island Developing States (SIDS) overcome the problems associated with the global economic situation as well as those caused by climate change.
Ambassador Lois Michele Young, addressing the United Nations “High Level Thematic Dialogue on Financing Sustainable Development” said that the developing countries are faced with economic, social, and environmental problems and despite progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), more than one billion people still live in extreme poverty.
“Income inequality within and among countries continues to rise. At the same time, unsustainable consumption and production patterns have resulted in huge economic and social costs and have already endangered life on the plant,:” she said in an address delivered on behalf of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), comprising the countries in the African, Caribbean and Pacific regions.
