CARICOM Customs officials will participate in a Customs Valuation Workshop to upgrade their skills in data collection for different valuation methods from 13-17 September, in Antigua and Barbuda.
The Workshop is part of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Commitment to CARICOM Member States to meet their WTO obligations and is aimed mainly at enhancing the trade positions of CARICOM countries in the global trade arena.
Given the need for in-service training in customs valuation to new recruits in the Customs and Excise departments in the Region, the Workshop is a “training of trainers” forum for the sharing of Customs Valuation skills among regional officials, based on the Agreement on Customs Valuation.
Customs Valuation and Technical Barriers to Trade are the priority areas identified under the second component of a two-fold WTO project of assistance to CARICOM and is intended to build capacity.
The first component of the project was completed in May 2003 by the Centre for Trade Policy and Law, Carleton University in Canada and entailed diagnostic studies to determine the status of implementation of CARICOM Member States’ WTO Commitments. It also recommended action to support the implementation of the commitments and comprised detailed analysis on the status of implementation of several WTO Agreements by each Member State.
The Customs Valuation Workshop will be facilitated by officials of the Canadian Border Security Agency (CBSA).
