CARICOM SECRETARY-GENERAL PAYS OFFICIAL VISIT TO THE REPUBLIC OF ITALY

 

(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana) Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), H.E. Edwin Carrington, will pay an official visit to the Republic of Italy from the 21st to the 22nd of July, where he will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen political, scientific and technical cooperation between CARICOM Member States and the Government of Italy.

Mr. Carrington’s visit follows an official invitation extended to him in March of this year to visit Rome. While there, he will hold talks with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs the Hon. Gianfranco Fini and other key officials, on issues of mutual interest and importance to the Community and Italy. He will also solicit Italy’s continued support for key issues such as CARICOM’s position on reform of the European Union (EU) sugar regime.

At present, the Region is beneftting from technical support being provided by Italy in a number of areas. These include the development and implementation of CARICOM’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Connectivity Agenda, the operation of the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre and a pilot project on renewable energy.

While in Rome, the CARICOM Secretary-General will also meet with Director General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), His Excellency Jacques Diouf, to discuss the FAO’s proposal for up-scaling the Regional Special Programme for Food Security
