WINNERS SELECTED IN CARICOM BOOK COVER DESIGN COMPETITION

Mr Andrew Davies, 23, a national of Jamaica, residing in Barbados, has captured the top prize in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat Book Cover Design competition.

Mr Davies’ entry was selected from among more than 200 entries in the competition to design the cover of a book about CARICOM entitled “Our Caribbean Community”. The competition, for Caribbean Community nationals between the ages of 14 and 24, was conducted during January and February 2001, and attracted young artists from almost every Member State of CARICOM.

His submission was selected by a judging panel which met in Trinidad and Tobago in April. The judges’ panel included Mr. Ricardo Redman, an outstanding graphic designer from Barbados as Chief Judge, CARICOM Secretary-General Edwin Carrington and leading Caribbean Book Publisher, Mr. Ian Randle of Jamaica.

For his winning submission, Mr Davies will receive a notebook computer, a portable printer/scanner, a trip to a CARICOM Member State (including accommodation for five days/four nights) and a copy of the book autographed by CARICOM Secretary-General Mr. Edwin Carrington. When contacted about his winning entry, Mr. Davies said he felt “deeply honoured and humbled”.

Additional prizes were awarded to three other creative and talented young persons. Ms Tavernelle Wells, 18, of Trinidad and Tobago, placed second and has won a notebook computer, a five-day visit to the CARICOM Secretariat, a book voucher worth EC$1,000 and a similarly autographed copy of the book.

For his third place entry, 16-year-old Kurt C. Dougan of St. Vincent and the Grenadines has won a notebook computer, a five-day visit to the CARICOM Secretariat and an autographed copy of the book. The fourth and final prize was captured by 15-year-old Donavan Daal of Suriname who won a visit to the CARICOM Secretariat and an autographed copy of the book.

Corporate sponsorship for the competition was provided by Banks DIH of Guyana, BWIA West Indies Airways, Courts Trinidad Limited, Ian Randle Publishers of Jamaica, Royal Bank of Trinidad and Tobago and Unit Trust Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago.  The book – “Our Caribbean Community” – provides the young people of our Community with an insight into the history and process of our regional integration movement. It will be published later this year by Ian Randle Publishers of Jamaica.
