Health and Family Life Education (HFLE)

The Human Resource Development (HRD) Programme of the CARICOM Secretariat in collaboration with the UWI- Food and Nutrition Project has developed a series of edutainment products to support the teaching of HFLE  in alignment with the revised CARICOM Health and Family Life Education Regional Curriculum Framework  which was approved at the 38th Meeting of COHSOD -Education  (2019).

The edutainment products developed to support teachers with the communication of some of the objectives of the curriculum (see below) were approved at the 44th Meeting of COHSOD – Education (2022)

HFLE Curriculum

In 2007, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government issued the historic Port of Spain Declaration “Uniting to Stop the Epidemic of Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs)” to address the heavy burden of NCDs in the Caribbean.

In 2017, The University of the West Indies, supported by the Canadian International Development Research Centre (IDRC), completed an evaluation of the implementation of policy decisions and mandates taken at the historic Port of Spain meeting of Caribbean Heads of State.

In 2018, the IDRC funded a follow up 4-year project, “Improving Household Nutrition Security and Public Health in CARICOM” to address the weaknesses identified by the Port of Spain Declaration Evaluation. One major plank of this new project is to work with the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat to support the revision of curricula to include more information on healthy eating and how this contributes to a healthy life.
