(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Newly accredited Mexican Ambassador to Caribbean Community (CARICOM), His Excellency Fernando Sandoval Flores, today underscored the commitment of the United Mexican States to fortify its relations with the Region.
Speaking at the Ceremony for the Presentation of Credentials, on May 28, 2009, Ambassador Sandoval stated that México’s establishment of an Embassy in Georgetown, Guyana – the headquarters of the CARICOM Secretariat- was a “political demonstration of the high interest” it had in deepening cooperation with the Community.
The Ambassador recalled the CARICOM/México Joint Commission of July 1974, which he said is aimed at promoting closer relations in the economic, cultural and technological areas as well as to seek a greater understanding the respective perceptions and positions at international forums.
Through the Joint CARICOM/Mexico Cooperation Agreement, the Community has received assistance in areas such as Spanish training; disaster preparedness; environmental health; maritime education and training; agriculture and agro industry; technology and manufacturing, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry, Ambassador Sandoval said.
He stated that México was anticipating the convening of the Fifth Meeting of the Mexico-CARICOM Joint Commission, followed by a Business and Academic Forum, in Mexico City in October 2009.
“We would like to take advantage of the meeting to review and update the relationship between México and CARICOM with the intention of fortifying all cooperative ties,” the newly accredited Ambassador said.
Illustrating the priority which México had given to its relations with the Region, he said that it had joined the Caribbean Bank of Development (CDB) in January 5th 1982 with the intention of contributing to the economic development of the Region.
Ambassador Sandoval is the first permanent Ambassador of México in Guyana. The country has embassies in five other CARICOM Member States: Belize, Haiti Jamaica, Saint Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago.
