(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Newspaper Editors and Youth Ambassadors will participate in workshops on CARICOM regional integration in Antigua and Barbuda during mid-July 2008.
The CARICOM Secretariat will be hosting a workshop on 14 July 2008 and approximately 20 CARICOM Youth Ambassadors (CYAs) will gather to learn more about CARICOM and CSME processes and be trained as advocates. During the sessions, CYAs will benefit from presentations on areas such as ‘The History of CARICOM’, ‘The Art of Public Speaking’, ‘Understanding the Media’ and ‘Advocacy Simulation’. It is expected for this critical grouping to also engage their peers in discussions on how to achieve sustainable livelihoods within CARICOM.
On 16-17 July 2008, following the conclusion of the CYA Workshop, a total of approximately 30 journalists from CARICOM Member States are expected to gather to participate in the Newspaper Editors CSME Workshop. The sessions are aimed at explaining how to make a living within the Community and to demystify the concept of regional integration including the CSME. Journalists will be exposed to presentations on areas such as ‘Writing on the CSME’, ‘Free Movement of Skills and Occupation,’ ‘Trade and Commerce’ and Competition. There will also be practical exercises to engage participants in creating easily digestible print material on CARICOM issues.
These events are part of a wider set of initiatives, the aim of which is to promote greater awareness and understanding of and especially active participation in CARICOM and the CSME by the peoples of the region. These events are being facilitated with the assistance of the European Union, under the 9th European Development Fund, Caribbean Integration Support Programme (CISP).
