GRENADA-DRUGS-Government urges caution as Grenadians celebrate annual Carnival

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – The Grenada Drug Epidemiology Network (GRENDEN) says young people between the ages 15 and 19 years accounted for 50 per cent of the patients admitted to health institutions for the consumption of illegal drugs.

A statement from the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Ecclesiastic Affairs noted also that 83 per cent of persons arrested and charged for drug related offences were within the same age group.

The statement warned nationals that they should resist “the lure of negative activities” during the Carnival celebrations which will end on Tuesday with the traditional street jump.

Youth, Sports, and Ecclesiastic Affairs Minister Emmalin Pierre said that given a significant number of young people are engaged in Carnival activities she was warning against the increase consumption of alcohol and illegal drugs.

She reminded the young people that “when the Carnival over work continues as usual, decisions have to be made, and life continues.”
