🎓 CARICOM Empowers Youth: 23 Professionals Trained to Champion CSME

“Across CARICOM, young people are driving innovations in technology, transforming the creative industries, championing climate action, and reimagining how our societies can thrive. This cohort of Young Professionals reflects that diversity and dynamism.”

Dr Carla Barnett | Secretary-General | CARICOM

Twenty-three young professionals from twelve CARICOM Member States have successfully completed four months of intensive training under the CARICOM Young Professionals Programme (CYPP), aimed at deepening their understanding of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME). The initiative equips youth with the tools to educate their peers and advocate for stronger youth involvement in regional integration. Their graduation was marked by a certificate presentation ceremony held on 17 October at the CARICOM Secretariat in Georgetown, Guyana, which also launched the CARICOM Young Professionals Network (CYPN).

In her keynote address, CARICOM Secretary-General Dr Carla Barnett praised the programme’s impact and reaffirmed the Secretariat’s commitment to youth empowerment. She highlighted the importance of youth voices in shaping and implementing CSME policies, noting that the participants are now well-positioned to engage with national and regional stakeholders.

“The knowledge and experiences shared under this programme were intended to align with ongoing efforts to deepen regional cooperation and strengthen the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), which remains our key integration objective,” stated the Secretary-General.

Dr Barnett encouraged the cohort to use their training to inform public dialogue, contribute to policy development, and mobilise communities through diverse media platforms. She emphasised that their role is central to the Region’s growth and adaptation, urging them to apply their knowledge to advance integration efforts.

“This programme was designed to amplify that energy and prepare you to serve as agents of change in your countries, your communities and across CARICOM,” she stated.

The Secretary-General also acknowledged the dynamic contributions of young people across the Region, from climate advocacy to creative industries, and challenged the graduates to see themselves as architects of a more resilient and unified Caribbean.

“The CARICOM Secretariat seeks to nurture, guide, and facilitate. As you move forward, we would like you to apply what you have learned, share it in your networks, and use it to advance regional integration,” stated Dr Barnett.
