Bahamas to discuss CARICOM energy building code

CMC – The Bahamas Bureau of Standards and Quality’s (BBSQ) Electro-Technical and Energy Efficiency Technical Committee says it will be discussing the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Regional Energy Efficiency Building Code (CREEBC) when it meets with stakeholders next month.
The technical committee has already been mandated to adopt the CREEBC as the national standard, with the CREEBC being an addendum to the Bahamas Building Code.
The CREEBC, which was developed through a collaboration between the CARICOM Regional Organisation for Standards and Quality (CROSQ) and the Energy Unit of the CARICOM Secretariat, is meant to meet the specific needs of Caribbean and other countries with tropical climates.
It establishes minimum energy efficiency requirements for buildings, including the building envelope, cooling system, ventilation, pumping, lighting and the service water heating systems.
“Countries of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) meet at least 95 percent of electricity generation needs through the use of imported fossil fuel. This dependency, particularly for commerce and manufacturing, has restricted global competitiveness, escalated indebtedness and increased potential for environmental harm.
“Additionally, the impact of global warming and climate change threatens to exacerbate these conditions, through increased energy demand and subsequent heightening of inefficiencies in electricity generating plants,” the CREEBC said, adding that the CARICOM Energy Unit, as part of the CARICOM Energy Programme, is implementing a Caribbean Sustainable Energy Roadmap and Strategy (C-SERM).
The BBSQ technical committee will review the CREEBC to determine which parts of the code it will adopt, with the recommendations will be passed on for Cabinet review.
The development of the CREEBC is part of the ongoing implementation of the C-SERM, a CARICOM programme aimed at increasing political will and private sector input for the adoption of more effective technologies for renewable energy, energy conservation and efficiency.
